newborn editing before and after | heather kelly photography

A lot goes into newborn photography. The prep time before the session. The time during the session. The time after the session editing. The editing takes the most amount of time. When I first get home from a newborn session, I upload the photos immediately to my computer. My first steps in editing are to cull the images. I go through all the images and mark the ones that I’m definitely going to but out. This can be because of missed focus, similar to another images that is stronger, blinked eyes, funny expression and so forth. These images immediately get deleted as the images take up a lot of space. I also mark all the definite keepers. My goal for a newborn session is to have 25-30 images to show my clients in their online gallery. I want these images to be unique with different angles and poses. I then begin the editing process. Newborn editing is a little more in depth than a family session. It requires more photoshop work as I often need to clone in where the backdrop is missing, fix the red and jaundice in baby’s skin, and smooth it.

Newborn editing before and after | Heather Kelly Photography

I thought it would be fun to shower newborn editing before and after. In the original image you can see that there was some color cast on her skin from the pink blanket. Her hands, feet, and legs were also red. Often babies have red or purple hands and feet as they have poor circulation. I brightened her up just a little bit, took care of the pink cast and red body parts. I find most babies have a little bit of jaundice, even if they aren’t really jaundiced. I took out a tiny bit of the yellow. I also smoothed her skin and fixed where the blanket is missing. I hope you enjoyed this newborn editing before and after.
